The Other Mendelssohn
one is never enough

Apart from Das Jahr, Fanny also composed several compositions for the salon (for her Sunday concerts). Like a presentiment of Venice, the Notturno in G Minor begins by alluding with barcarole-like rhythms and doubled melodic thirds to Felix’s Venetianisches Gondellied in G Minor, op. 19, no. 6, but then expands into a substantial, intense composition that easily dwarfs the miniature dimensions of its fraternal antecedent. Through an imaginative use of register Fanny masterfully creates contrasting timbral effects, ranging from the darkened, murky depths of the piano to the radiant, translucent clarity of the high treble. Paralleling this contrast is a deft manipulation of tonality—while much of the composition is submerged in a chromatically charged G minor, near the end, as delicate sixteenth-note figurations climb into the treble, the music breaks through to a quiet, translucent close in G major.
